Foreign Professors are Becoming Real Family Members of Zhejiang University

More and more foreign professors are attracted to join the big family of Zhejiang University due to its increasing internationalization. While making their effort to speed up the development pace of the university, they are getting adjusted to the environment as well. Stijn van der Veen, a professor of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, was hired as a full-time professor in June 6th, 2014 before which he was doing research in the University of Oxford . Since starting this position, he has been making remarkable progress in his research work. Meanwhile he has been impressed by the university’s constant effort in building the international research atmosphere and the given generous consideration and care to him and his family.
After coming here, Prof. Stijn van der Veen’s was provided with a research team including two students of Mater’s and two PhD students. To meet the specific safety requirement of his N. meningitides experiment, Zhejiang University School of Medicine provided him with a P2 lab which meets the international biology safety standard, and thus a safe experimental environment could be guaranteed.
Thanks to the constant effort of his research team members and the equipped instruments, recently Prof. Stijn van der Veen online published a paper in Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy which is an international mainstream journal, and the finding of this paper would possible benefit the treating methods of gonorrhoeae.   
Under the support of Scientific Research Department of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Stijn applied a bunch of research projects including the General Project of NSFC, and they were successfully approved. He showed happiness with the result and gratefulness for the assistance offered by staff of Scientific Research Department.
Stijn’s team also had some clinical research cooperation with Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital and other four hospitals. He indicated that more and more high quality research work is depending on such cooperation. In addition, he is also working as a research consultant at Zhejiang Disease Control Center.  
During the past one year, Stijn is gradually getting used to the life here, and he said that he felt like being a real member of this big family, Zhejiang University; he has been involved in the research work as well as the colorful campus life. Being a member of Zhejiang University School of Medicine Basketball Faculty Team, he has met and made a lot of friends who share the same interest. He showed his willingness to see more and more foreign researchers and professors come to Zhejiang University and do some contribution to the development of the school.
